Art performs essential functions in our lives, beyond the ornamental: it is kindling for the spirit that inspires courage, charity, and innovation in times of crisis and privation by reminding us of our capacity to create and recreate our world; it is a form of communication that transcends verbal language, now more desperately needed than ever, that can connect all strata of society, all ages, all persuasions; it is a means of inner exploration that can heal and integrate the tortured soul. Our capacity for artistic expression may well be the defining feature of what it is to be human.
